acetic acid therapy for cervical cancer
Acetic acid was not only add savory flavor in dishes, but also useful as an early detection of cervical cancer that easy and inexpensive. Early detection of cervical cancer with acetic acid method is called IVA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid). This method has been introduced since 1925 by Hans Hinselman from Germany, but it was applied about 2005.

Health Ministry of Indonesia had already adopted it. This method is simple and inexpensive but also has a very high accuracy in detecting precancerous lesions or sores, which reached 90 percent.

Early detection by applying acetic acid 3-5 percent in the mouth of the womb (cervix), this should not only be done by a doctor, but can be practiced by trained personnel such as nurses at the clinic. And in about 60 seconds already can be seen if there are abnormalities, that is the emergence of a white plaque on the cervix. These white plaques may be alerted as precancerous lesions.

World Health Organization (WHO) has examined the application of the IVA in India, Thailand, and Zimbabwe. Its effectiveness was not lower than the pap smear.

In addition to the same performance with other tests and the results can be immediately known, IVA also offers other advantages, that is practical, requiring only simple tools, and affordable.

Inke Maris, a communications expert who is also cofounder of the Initiative Prevention of Cervical Cancer Indonesia (Ipkasi), said many health centers that can provide this IVA test, which cost about 15 thousand rupiahs ( US$ 1,60).

"In fact, some areas have already published a local regulation that sets the price is only five thousand rupiahs for the IVA examination," said Dr. Basalama Fatum, MKM, Head of Sub Directorate of Cancer. PPTM, Ministry of Health of Indonesia.

This therapy was short, about 5 minutes. Indeed, there is discomfort when undergoing this therapy. Most women feel the sensation of cold and a little cramping, or sometimes feel warm spread on the upper body and face.

Easily perform as well as treatment if it is found precancerous lesions, spurring See and Treat program increasingly being applied in a number of health centers. Expected with the IVA, will more and more women that reached by early detection of cervical cancer, so the incidence of these cancers may be reduced.

coffee reduces risk of skin cancer
Coffee Reduces Risk of Skin Cancer - Coffee may reduce the risk of skin cancer. The good news was released by the American Association for Cancer Research and Prevention at their 10th conference. At an international conference which was held in Boston, they showed that coffee is very good, especially for women, because it has a positive effect on the risk of skin cancer.

Women who drank more than three cups of coffee per day had a 20 percent lower risk of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), compared with women who drank less than one cup per month. BCC is one of the most frequently diagnosed skin cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, 75 percent of all cases of skin cancer is a type of BCC. Until now there are about 22.786 cases were recorded. Men who drank the same amount, have a nine percent lower risk of developing skin cancer.

"Our study indicates that coffee consumption may be an important option to help prevent BCC," said Fengju Song, researchers involved in the study.

Data were obtained from studies conducted by nurses at Brigham Women's Hospital, and profesional health practitioners (Harvard School of Public Health). Nurses take data from about 72.921 participants from June 1984 to June 2008. Health professionals examined data from 39.976 participants from June 1986 to June 2008.

Unfortunately, the benefits of drinking coffee is not seen have a positive impact on other types of skin cancer, ie squamous cell carcinoma (1953 cases) or melanoma (741 cases). Previous studies have shown coffee drinkers tend to have a lower risk of breast cancer, uterine, prostate and colon cancer (see Benefits of Coffee). But the good effect is not seen in people who drink decaffeinated coffee.

Are You Alcoholic? Check Your Heart Health

check your heart health
If you like to drink alcohol, it's time to be vigilant. Do your heart health checks to detect possible early emergence of liver cirrhosis.

"For those of you who have a history of heavy alcohol drinkers or affected by chronic hepatitis, you should conduct examination yourself as an early detection measures," said Dr. Irsan Hasan, SpPD KGEH, Specialist Internal Medicine-Hepatology Consultant Gastroentero Jatinegara Premier Hospital in talk show in Jakarta.

All over the world, liver cirrhosis is the leading cause of death of the fifth for men and seventh for women. Approximately 25,000 people die each year from this disease. Liver cirrhosis in Indonesia suffered more by men than women.

In the early stages of cirrhosis didn't cause any symptoms, because patients may suffer from cirrhosis of the liver for longer periods of time without being aware of the disease.

Cirrhosis are also at risk of developing liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). The risk varies according to the cause of cirrhosis, the biggest risk is caused by infection with hepatitis C and B, followed by haemochromatosis.

Moreover, if the results of physical examination found an enlarged heart and fluid accumulation, then there is a suspicion you get cirrhosis of the liver. Blood tests can also confirm the failure of liver function.

"If cirrhosis is not clearly detected, it can also be examined hepatitis virus antibodies or auto-antibodies that may have been attacking your liver cells, excess iron or copper in the blood, and others," he said.

The liver is the largest organ in the body. Cirrhosis is a chronic disease that attacks the liver on an ongoing basis and in the long run. This means that damage to normal liver tissue that makes this organ can not be working properly.

Alcohol and Breast Cancer

wine and breast cancer
Alcohol and Breast Cancer - Do you frequently consume alcoholic beverages? If so, you should stop that habit now. Besides it is not good for health, apparently drinking three glasses of alcohol a week may increase a woman's risk of breast cancer, according to a study.

Women in the study who drank 3-6 glasses of wine per week, 15 percent more likely to develop breast cancer. Scientists claim is based on data taken over a period of 28 years.

This study adds evidence on the relationship between alcohol consumption and increased risk of breast cancer. Consumption in moderate to high amounts previously been associated with risk of breast cancer, and now the effect of lower levels of consumption amounts apparently are equally daunting.

Involving 105.986 women, the study was implemented from 1980-2008 as part of the Nurses Health Study. All participants were asked to answer questionnaires at regular intervals about their alcohol consumption and whether they have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

During the study period, found 7.690 cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed. However, cases increased from 333 cases to 100,000 cases of breast cancer in women who drank 3-6 glasses of wine per week.

"The risks were found in this study are real. So although good for the heart, women still need to think about its effect on cancer risk," explains researcher Dr Wendy Chen, of the Brigham Women's Hospital in Boston, USA.

Bread Can Increase Breast Cancer Risk

Posted by Hendra Wibowo on Monday, April 23, 2012

white bread increase the risk of breast cancer
Bread Can Increase Breast Cancer Risk - Eating white bread and potatoes can increase the risk of breast cancer. As stated by the scientists who conducted the research at the University of California, San Diego.

The study found that people who follow a starch-rich diet (amylum) are more at risk for developing tumors than those who rarely eat starch. The researchers could not explain this trend. However, they assume that the increase in insulin levels triggered by refined carbohydrates such as starch can stimulate the growth of cancer cells.

Researchers studied the diets of 2651 breast cancer patients for 12 months. They found that people who frequently eat starch has a 14.2 percent risk of breast cancer. This risk level is higher than that rarely consume starch, which is about 9.7 percent.

"The results show that not only carbohydrates as a whole (which could potentially increase the risk of cancer), but particularly starch," said University of California researchers, Jennifer Emond. Studies have not been able to give advice on a good diet to prevent this cancer.

At first, the women's carbohydrate intake was 233 grams per day. The researchers studied the diets of women who experience breast cancer recurrence after several years. Those who have a relapse generally add starch intake of 2.3 grams per day in the first year. Meanwhile, patients who did not relapse generally reduce the intake of starch 2.7 grams per day.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. This disease affects about 46,000 women every year. Carbohydrates are the most important fuel for the muscles and vital energy source for brain and central nervous system. Refined carbohydrates such as bread contain more starch than from grains (like rice).

Breast Cancer Campaign chief executive, Baroness Delyth Morgan, appreciate these findings. "This study shows that reducing starch consumption may reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence. We are waiting for more research on this issue," she said.

How To Reduce The Risk of Breast Cancer?

Posted by Hendra Wibowo on Sunday, April 22, 2012

how to reduce the risk of breast cancer
How To Reduce The Risk of Breast Cancer - Breast cancer cases in the United States is the highest in the world, reaching 1.126 per 100,000 people. In the UK, breast cancer is one of the most common diseases in women. Each year, about 47,000 British women are diagnosed with this disease, and about 341 cases in men.

Medicalnewstoday noted, the rate of breast cancer has increased from year to year. It is believed that nutrition and lifestyle factors, such as excessive alcohol consumption, a high-fat diet, low-fiber diet, and obesity play a role in breast cancer risk.

Mariette Abrahams, spokesperson freelance registered dietitian, said that currently, the demand for efforts to prevent breast cancer and early treatment are very high. "In the future, we may be able to provide a more personalized dietary advice to individuals who have inherited a gene variant that increases the risk of developing breast cancer," said Abrahams.

But as early prevention, here are some ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer :

1. Weight control
Make sure you do regular physical exercise, and always choosing healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and low fat dairy products, so that your weight can be controlled.

2. Consume more vegetarian foods
Eat more fruits and vegetables, fiber, and legumes such as soybeans. Because these foods are known can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Try to eat at least five servings a day. Visit your nutritionist to help a simple way to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your diet.

3. Reduce foods that contain saturated fats
Avoid foods, especially saturated fat from animal products, and replace them with good fats that can be found in avocados, olive oil, nuts, and salmon.

4. Reduce salt and sugar
Reduce your intake of salt in every food you eat and avoid cakes, pastries, and cookies because they contain refined sugar.

5. Consider your alcohol consumption
Women who consume too much alcohol regularly have a higher risk of breast cancer. To reduce the risk, you are recommended to consume only 2-3 units per day, or 14 units per week. One unit is equal to half a standard glass of wine or 175ml.

Foods That Trigger Cancer Risk

Posted by Hendra Wibowo on Saturday, April 21, 2012

baked foods trigger cancer risk
Foods That Trigger Cancer Risk - Many people love the baked foods. There are many restaurants serving baked foods, because people love it. However, scientists say that the baked foods can give a bad impact on health (trigger cancer risk).

Compared by boiling, food that is cooked by baking can increase the risk of cancer up to two times, although food is well cooked. The scientists found that meat that is baked or fried undergo carcinogenic mutations on its surface.

A study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, tested the mice for experiments that are expected to reflect similar conditions in humans. They found that humans have certain enzymes called sulfotransferases (sult) in some parts of their bodies. In mice, this enzyme is exists only in the liver.

Sult enzyme serves to convert some of the ingredients in foods that are not harmful to the body. In addition, this enzyme also has the ability to change the content of the food to be carcinogenic or cancer causing.

"We want to examine the development of colon tumors in mice which often consumed baked and fried foods, and compare it with the development of tumors in normal mice that is fed the same contaminated food," said the scientists.

The result shows that scientists find colon tumors increased from 31 to 80 percent in mice who ate a baked meat, just like humans. In addition, the scientists also noted that the mice is not a perfect experiment to illustrate the health risks of human colon via the consumption of contaminated food. But it's good if we don't consume baked foods too often, because it can trigger cancer risk.

The Cause of Baldness in Men

the cause of baldness in men
The Cause of Baldness in Men - Baldness is something that is avoided by most men in this world. Various products that claimed to overcome the problem of baldness can be easily obtained in the market today, although these products are not 100 percent effective.

Baldness in men is caused by many factors. Genetics, lifestyle, stress levels, and hair care products can be one of several contributing factors.

Recently, researchers discovered a new cause of hair loss problems that is often experienced by men. American researchers found a protein that is considered as a trigger of hair loss.

According to the study (published in Science Translational Medicine), men with high levels of protein PDG2 (prostagladin D2) on the scalp are more likely to experience the baldness problems. PDG2 Protein is a protein that can inhibit hair growth.

The researchers analyzed the hair follicles of 22 men who experience baldness problems. The researchers also took tissue samples on the scalp of men with androgenetic alopecia (the most common cause of baldness in men) and then measure the level of the gene.

The researchers found a high PDG2 protein content on the part of the bald head. PGD2 protein content is three times more than is found in the part of the scalp that are still widely covered by hair.
"Basically, our study shows an increase in the number of prostaglin protein on the scalp of a bald man, and this inhibits hair growth. So, we have to identify the target first before treating the problem of baldness in men," said lead researcher Dr. George Cotsarelis.
